The Bacardi family is famous for its world-renowned liquor and spirits. At present, it is the largest family-run liquor conglomerate in the world, distributing over 200 million bottles each year to 100 countries. Founded in Santiago de Cuba in 1862, the Bacardi family’s Bacardi Limited was the first Cuban company to become multi-national.
More importantly, the Bacardi spirit thrives in venerable causes. It has been a longtime partner for disaster relief missions across the globe. It gave away $100,000 to the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF) as relief aid to victims of devastating hurricanes and storms that hit Cuba. In the past, it also assisted in disaster efforts for the Southeast Asian tsunami, the earthquake in China, and Hurricane Katrina.
Its concern for the environment is notable. In fact, the conglomerate’s philanthropic arm, The Bacardi Foundation, was formed in 1994 to pursue environmental initiatives. It worked with the Stockholm Water Foundation to develop research and technology in water initiatives. Among the award-winning Bacardi grantees was Dr. Michael Szendry, who received an EPA citation for developing the first wastewater treatment technology that converted methane into steam.
The Bacardi family, through Bacardi Limited funded the Bahamas National Trust-Nature Conservancy Project with a $150,000 donation to enhance the organization’s management capabilities in the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park.
